Gifts may be in any amount

Gifts to the Endowment Fund (and any planned gift to Summit) are valued for their intent and not their size.  Together we are a community, and we each make a difference in the future of the congregation.

Gifts may be for different reasons (examples)

  • In memory of a friend or loved one no longer living
  • In honor of another person
  • In celebration of an important event
  • As a legacy gift in a planned giving arrangement through a will or trust agreement

Gifts may be in many forms

  • Cash and bequest of cash
  • Securities
  • Real estate (subject to evaluation)
  • Remainder interests in property
  • Life insurance beneficiary designations
  • Life insurance where the Fellowship owns the policy
  • Retirement plan beneficiary designations
  • Tangible personal property (subject to evaluation)

Endowment Fund Investment

Endowment Fund principal is currently invested through the UU Common Endowment Fund (UUCEF).  The UUCEF is managed for congregations by the Unitarian Universalist Association to produce income and balanced growth.  The UUCEF applies socially responsible investing criteria that reflect UU values in investment decisions.

Use of gifts to the Endowment Fund

All gifts to the Endowment Fund are managed by Endowment Fund Trustees elected by the congregation.

The Trustees manage the Endowment Fund assuming it will provide perpetual financial support to the Fellowship, with annual distributions not to exceed 5% of the asset market value once the Endowment Fund reaches a target threshold.

Unless a donor specifies that his/her contribution to the Endowment Fund is to be permanently restricted, the Endowment Fund is considered a quasi-endowment, as the Summit Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SUUF) reserves the right for the congregation to receive exceptional distributions in excess of the 5%, with the approval of 85% of the Board and voting membership.

Distributions may be for various purposes

  • For special congregation projects not provided for by the operating budget
  • For supporting the communities in which the Fellowship resides and operates
  • For enhancing, repairing, supplementing or improving the Fellowship’s buildings and property
  • For scholarships and grants to Fellowship members and staff for education and training
  • For supporting the wider mission of Unitarian Universalism
