Dismantling White Supremacy
The 8th Unitarian Universalist Principle
“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
– Adopted by Summit June 13, 2021
The 8th principle was adopted by Summit UUF on June 13, 2021. Thank you to everyone who was involved in making this happen! Now that the 8th principle has been adopted, the real work begins. We will be hosting book studies, courses, and services to open our hearts and minds to a deeper understanding of the role of racism and other oppressions. While at the same time, Summit’s board, committees, and affinity groups will all be asked to consider how they could live into the 8th principle in order to create radical welcome. In addition, members of SJIA and any others who are interested will be engaging with community organizations in support of people of color and other marginalized groups in our area.
Part of living into the newly adopted 8th principle is educating ourselves and getting the conversation going about racism and other oppressions and how they show up in ourselves, our congregation, and our communities. The SJIA committee has been compiling an anti-racist resource guide. Check it out and let us know if you have any resources to recommend.
