Mary Carter-Vail, Director of Religious Exploration
summitDRE@gmail.com
(619) 562-0833 ext. 204

Mary became a Unitarian Universalist as a young teen when her mother got a job at a small UU congregation in Brunswick, Maine. She quickly became involved with other UU youth, locally and nationally, attending conferences including Common Ground, General Assemblies and youth leadership trainings. These were an integral part of her development as a youth leader and future religious educator.

Mary met her husband, Paul, at a youth conference. Two years later, they were married and have been together ever since.  They were both active in the UU Young Adult & Campus Ministry movement in the late 80’s and early 90’s. They moved to San Diego in 1988 and became members of First UU San Diego and started their family. Mary continued as an active UU volunteer in various committees and as a RE volunteer teacher and helper as she raised 3 children.

In 2010, Mary joined SUUF as a member and started actively serving on the Children’s Religious Exploration Committee. She became the Interim Director of Religious Exploration in February of 2011. During the 6 months as Summit’s Interim DRE, Mary discovered a passion for the work of helping UU children and youth to explore their spiritual path. She accepted the DRE position in the summer of 2011. She has worked to implement a creative program that fulfills the Committee on Religious Exploration mission statement. New programs have included creating UU identity banners, Summer of Seuss, and Hogwarts Summer School.

Mary holds a degree in Pastry Arts from Johnson and Wales University. She worked in the Hotel Restaurant industry for 10 years prior to becoming a parent. She has run several home-based businesses and was a successful polymer clay jewelry artist.  Her leadership and volunteer coordinating skills were honed working with the local school Parent Teacher Association where she held leadership positions including Fundraising Chair, Executive VP and President. She has also volunteered in the classroom for over 12 years assisting teachers with academic work and presenting to the students as an art docent. Additional volunteer work includes leadership, planning and organization of events, and camps for scouts.

Linda Peck, Office Administrator

(619) 562-0833

Since coming to Summit in October of 2002, Linda enjoys supporting the Summit community through her work as office administrator.  She is proud of the many social action and environmental issues Summitarians are involved with, and feels a great sense of fulfillment by giving her strengths to her work and the loving people she has many warm friendships with.

She is able to draw on skills from a variety of past jobs and courses, as well as her passions.  From printing press operation and graphics; Documentation Administrator at NAS (Hitachi computers); botany, gardening, and landscape design; past participation in environmental groups; to involvement in the Santee community; are some of the experiences she has “under her belt.”

Linda is passionate about rocks, gardening, various art mediums, hiking and exploring. Oh, and her adult children and grand-dogs!  They are incredibly active young people and include their mother in a good number of their outings.

“I am grateful to have found Unitarian Universalism at the same time I took a great job. You never know what might turn up in the “Classifieds.”   ~ Linda Peck
