The Lady and the Lute
Deirdre Sullivan will play a Lute Concert for us, Sunday October 18th, from 1:00-2:30, in our Sanctuary.
Doors open at 12:30, $20 suggested donation, cash or check only at door.
Her lute repertoire is similar to her Celtic Harp one. Tunes will feature ballads and dance tunes from England, Ireland, and Scotland. The Celtic Lute has a sound similar to a Classical Guitar and is well suited to contrapuntal instrumental music.
The lute was very popular in Europe from the early 1500s up until the late 1700s. It fell out of favour for much of the 1800s until musicians in late Victorian England started studying and playing it again. The lute experienced an immense revival in Germany starting in the early 20th century. Deirdre’s Lute was made in Dresden, Germany by Michael Haaser and has 9 strings.
