In the famous Flower Sermon, Buddha simply held up a flower and didn’t say a word. The Zen tradition has used this story for centuries to make the point that nothing exists on its own—everything is because everything else is—a flower is really the sun, the rain, the soil, and the florist all present in this now moment together. Join us as we explore the idea of interdependent origination, and the many ways this fundamental orientation shapes our morals, ethics, and metaphysical stance in the world.
Peter Bolland is professor of philosophy and humanities and department chair at Southwestern College. He received his BA in religious studies from UC Santa Barbara and an MA in Philosophy from SDSU. In addition to his college commitments, he lectures in a wide variety of venues on philosophical, spiritual, and mythological subjects. And this summer, Bolland will be the keynote speaker at the Summer Break Camp for Adults, August 8-12, at Camp de Benneville Pines where he will lead a multi-day workshop around his new book The Seven Stone Path: An Everyday Journey to Wisdom.
