As Buddha lay dying he told his monks to remember that “All forms come into being and all forms go out of being.” Anitya, or impermanence, is at the heart of Buddhist wisdom, as it is at the heart of many of the world’s wisdom traditions. But why is it so hard for us to understand this, let alone accept it? Join us as we search the insights of the world’s sages and seers for tools we can use to build meaningful lives in the midst of these fleeting, impermanent forms.
Peter Bolland is professor of philosophy and humanities and department chair at Southwestern College. He received his BA in religious studies from UC Santa Barbara and an MA in Philosophy from SDSU. In addition to his college commitments, he lectures in a wide variety of venues on philosophical, spiritual, and mythological subjects. His talks through Oasis and Osher are typically sold out, and he has participated in services and workshops and retreats at several UU congregations.
