What is the most good that we can do? The “effective altruism” movement claims to give us a way to think about this question — but somehow it has led to people ignoring human misery and urgent global problems in favor of far-fetched plans to fill the universe with computers that simulate human consciousness. I will look at some of the fundamental flaws of effective altruism, and suggest ways of avoiding them.
Rev. Everett Howe (he/him) is a UU community minister affiliated with First UU San Diego. He is the administrator for the UUA’s new online hymnal Sing Out Love, and he supports congregations in Southern California and Arizona through preaching and pastoral coverage. In addition to his ministerial work, Rev. Howe continues to spend half his time with his first calling: research mathematics.
