Does gratitude come only after we get everything we want? Or is gratitude a decision we make here and now, regardless of circumstances? The way we answer these questions deeply shapes the quality of our lives. The Roman philosopher Seneca wrote that “Gratitude is not only the greatest of all the virtues, it is the parent of all the others.” Let’s explore ways of cultivating the consciousness of gratitude, even in these trying times.
Peter Bolland is a professor of philosophy and humanities at Southwestern College where he has taught world religions, Asian philosophy, and world mythology for 34 years.
Bolland’s book The Seven Stone Path: An Everyday Journey to Wisdom draws on those years of immersion in the world’s wisdom traditions. He also has a popular YouTube channel, a Substack newsletter called Finding a Way, leads guided meditations on the Insight Timer app, and is a frequent speaker at learning communities and spiritual centers around the country.
