Support Our Youth for GA 2017!

The Summit Youth Group is planning to attend and fully participate in Justice General Assembly 2017 in New Orleans, LA. Having the opportunity to connect with a larger UU community this June is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we would extremely appreciate your help getting us there. We are a youth group from sunny Southern California. Our church is Summit UU Fellowship in Santee, San Diego County. For us seeing how a completely different culture and society within the United States works would be an amazing thing to behold. Our congregation supports this effort with love and financial support. Because we are a small congregation in a socioeconomically disadvantaged part of our community, we are in need some additional financial help and are asking for your support. By getting the opportunity to go to General Assembly in New Orleans, we plan to take every last drop of information and sense of community that we can back to Summit For us, coming together with the larger Unitarian Universalist community is a great way to truly get to know the wider UU culture and faith vision. Experiencing not only the wider UU community, but the culture and history of New Orleans is an amazing opportunity, especially considering that our local history is about the Spaniards and native nations, rather than slavery and plantation owners.

To be in a group of thousands of UU’s is something few at our church can say they’ve done. To feel the compassion and acceptance all around you, and to know that no matter what you say, you will be listened to is one of the best ways to figure out where you stand in faith and other issues in the world at large.

Because this is a Justice General Assembly, we are also very excited to see our faith in action and hope to be able to participate in actions that support justice for all. To prepare for this experience, we are looking deeply at the stories coming from marginalized communities in our area and in the New Orleans and the Deep South so that we can be ready to offer our hearts to the work of this gathering.

We aspire to then come back to our own community and stand up for our ideals through social action work as a way to help our world, with a goal to spread our compassion and care to everyone. Each day, we “Stand on the Side of Love” and believe that this experience will offer us new ways to live and love as we work for justice each and every day.

We are working hard to raise the funds needed for our group to attend. The total cost of attending for our group of seven youth and three adults is just over $10,000. We have received two grants, from our Western Region and UUA Youth Group Grants totaling $2,000. Our congregation is matching this. Many of our youth and adult advisers have applied to be GA Volunteers, to help with registration. With our additional fundraising activities to date, we are half-way there! We have been very creative in our housing plans as a way to reduce costs. We are renting a house where Advisers and Youth will be housed together, in accordance to the GA Youth Sponsor guidelines. We plan to prepare meals together, including lunches, and to use public transportation to further reduce costs. Our biggest expense is for airfare. We have a plan and are deeply engaged in raising the additional funds. With your support, this experience will be accessible for our group.

We are youth on a journey to become life-long Unitarian Universalists. If you can help us along on our path to becoming who we are and offer us this opportunity to learn to shape our community we would sincerely appreciate it!
